Does Your Car Go Into Limp Mode? Perhaps It's Your Oil Cooler

Most people understand the importance of their vehicle's water cooling system. They know that this water has to be pumped through a forward-facing radiator in an attempt to cool down the engine block and internal components. Yet, they may not realise how important it is to cool down the lubricant as well if they are to avoid long and even short-term problems. If you're confused by oil cooling systems in general and may have already encountered some issues, what do you need to know?

Understanding Your Oil

Engine oil is a very highly engineered product. It's designed to lubricate all the moving parts but will only work correctly if the ambient temperature within the engine is kept within certain parameters. Most modern-day cars have a thermostat that is meant to monitor and regulate the temperature of the oil. However, this thermostat is set to operate at predetermined figures that do not necessarily consider how the vehicle is driven.

Under Pressure

For example, you may use your car to tow a trailer or caravan on a regular basis. Alternatively, you may live in a mountainous region and have to deal with undulating roads quite often. In this case, the engine may need to work harder, and the temperature may often spike. In the worst-case scenario, this will trigger a shutdown and may force your car to go into what is known as "limp" mode.

Signs of a Problem

If you've noticed a drop in performance accompanied by a warning light on the dash, this could be the problem. You may find that your vehicle is not yet equipped to deal with these heavy loads, and you should take steps to fix that.

Oil Cooler Size

The first place to look is your engine oil cooler. Again, most modern-day vehicles are fitted with one of these, but they tend to be the standard specification, and you may need an upgrade. If you fit a bigger oil cooler and, potentially, make some changes to the thermostat setting, then you may be able to regulate the oil temperatures more effectively. The engine should perform a lot better and will last longer. You may also be able to avoid driving under limp mode altogether if you take this action.

Getting an Upgrade

Contact a company that sells products like Toyota spare parts and find out what type of oil cooler is fitted to your vehicle. They may be able to provide you with a larger version so you can continue driving without fear of failure.
